Most people who are involved in studios are very tech and equipment oriented. Analog vs digital, tube gear, etc. All this talk of trying to achieve things like warmth.Has anyone you know ever bought a CD because it was 'warm'?
People buy music because it affects them. To make music that affects people, you have to be able to immerse yourself freely back into the spirit you were in when you were at the point when you wrote or discovered the music. That was the point at which it affected you the most In order to do that, you need to be unencumbered by the technical process of recording. In fact, you actually need more. You need to record in an environment where you can recapture that feeling of origin and power that the song or piece had during it's creation or discovery. You also need someone around who can readily recognize when something's happening and when it's not, who knows what to do about it when it's not.
For us, recording is a humanistic craft more than a technical one.
At Little Castle, this is our primary focus, our most important ability - enabling you to perform at your absolute optimum level. This focus has resulted in an unusually high percentage of our projects reaching national and international audiences. We have recorded scores of successful CD projects, including a #1 children’s record of the year, a top ten folk album of the year, and several projects you’ve probably heard on NPR.
Our customers are consistently thrilled with their experience here:
Pete Sutherland referred to our service as "swift, transparent, capable, and unobtrusive"
Carla Sciaky called our engineering "flawless"
Coyote Oldman said "this is the best built studio he's ever been in"
Adam Rosenberg commented that "it would have been impossible to achieve this result somewhere else"
We specialize in, but aren’t limited to, the high quality recording, mixing, and editing of acoustic oriented music.
Our studio facility was designed and built from the ground up to be a theatrically correct mix room for film post and surround projects. Most rooms with this capability are retrofits. The greatest care was taken for isolation and room acoustics. Our main room and control room are completely structurally unique with no mechanical coupling whatsoever to each other or the outside world. Each room is built on its own 9” concrete slab that sits comfortably in its own pillow of 2” foam. Radiant heat in the slabs is absolutely quiet with no HVAC system to make even the slightest noise or allow the slightest intrusion of sound from other places. Our control room is quiet enough to be used with open mics. This allows the main room to be used as a huge isolation booth for drums or grand piano. We can digitally edit and master your work and burn one-off CD-R’s for replication or reference, for archiving, or simply for great demos.
We can provide all the graphics services your project requires, including digital manipulation of photos, typesetting, etc. — and we can begin the process at the beginning of your project, so you won’t be saddled with the classic graphics waiting game at replication time.
Our principals, Horace Williams and Terry King are also audio equipment designers and builders. Much of our equipment is built by us, including our balanced mix bus console.
Horace Williams, Jr. is a seasoned recording artist, producer, engineer, and studio musician with over 30 years experience in professional recording. His credits include work with Donovan and Andrew Loog Oldham (producer, Rolling Stones) to name a few. Most important, he is an expert at putting people at ease. He has a keen understanding of what makes people tick in the studio, and is tireless in his quest to enable people to work unencumbered and inspired.
Terry King has an extensive background in Broadcasting and Audio Engineering, and recently worked for IBM designing hardware and software for digital audio and Multimedia. He offers digital audio editing and CD mastering, and full graphics services including photography, CD cover design and layout.
